Concrete Retail Store Design

In the fall of 2007 Juliska, a world class Tableware retailer was seeking a flooring solution for their new store in Stamford Connecticut.

The image for their 2000 square foot flagship store was critical. They also needed a functional solution that was easy to maintain. Originally they just wanted to work with the existing concrete slab and seal it with a concrete sealer.

They were seeking a minimalist look on their floor that would not detract from their featured tableware which was beautifully displayed.

The problem was the concrete slab was beat up during construction. Lighting being a big factor required cutting out areas of the concrete to run electric lines. The newly filled in concrete was a significant contrast to the floor. Other typical blemishes were drywall and paint on the floor during the construction process. These were problems that needed a solution.

The new store is in an old manufacturing building in an area of Stamford being redeveloped into high end boutiques, expensive condos, new office buildings. The new space has a transition issue from entrance steps into retail space. Front step and store floor space were same the height meaning they could not use an interior flooring product that would raise the height of existing floor.

Cracks had to be properly filled to avoid showing through later. All drywall compound and paint had to be removed from the concrete floor.

The solution was a concrete overlay, very thin, imperfect, a European image in gray pewter. The overlay finish is sandstone with natural mottling . Maintenance is made simple and inexpensive using Waterworks a high quality daily cleaner and microfiber mops.

The floor was designed and installed by Dan DiLeonardo of Surface Tone based in Norwalk Connecticut.

The owners of Juliska are masters at displaying unique items for sale. Image is everything. All items had to be displayed to enhance their appearance. Shelving, walls, lighting, ceiling, floor all need to be in perfect harmony for Juliska to display their products. The concrete floor set the stage. Response has been strong with lots of compliments about the floor.

This is a case scenario where a simple concrete floor was the perfect flooring solution solving a height issue with the perfect value added image.
