Lake Ozark Pool Deck and Boat Dock Resurfacing

The concrete was in rough shape from years of wear and tear. The pool deck was approximately 1,100 square feet and was completed for about $5.00 psf.

Lake Ozark is a resort community. Many of the houses in the area are second homes and well maintained. There is strong demand for maintaining and resurfacing swimming pools and boat docks and a great niche business for Designer Concrete Coatings.

The process was to clean the surface, repair all the cracks in the pool deck and do an acid wash to open up the pores of the concrete. Then the first coat of the concrete overlay was applied to the pool deck concrete surface in a light color. The first coats color will show as the grout line color.

After the first coat cured a brick stencil was positioned on the surface. The second coat was mixed in the color of the brick and was sprayed on with a hopper gun. A hopper gun is hooked up to a compressor with an air feed. Concrete is poured into 1 gallon bucket with a gravity feed into the gun. Various tip sizes and air flow can be adjusted to regulate flow of concrete.

After the brick coat has dried the stecil pattern is removed. The grout lines visible are the first coat. After concrete fully cures sealers are applied.

The swimming pool deck designs above were completed by Paul Taylor and K.C. McDonald of AKABeton from Vancouver B.C. Both can be seen in the artistan section at Colormaker Floors The project was at a resort in Mexico.

Colormaker Floors of Vancouver B.C. was the product manufacturer. The Colormaker product was Sgraffino, a very high end natural looking concrete skim coat integrally colored with Colorfast, an Iron Oxide powdered pigment mixed into the Sgraffino.

The swimming pool deck designs were simply created using masking tape and application of Sgraffino with a Magic Trowel and steel trowel.

The final seal coats were Texture Seal another Colormaker Floors product.

The picture above is of improperly fixed cracks. The crack was filed only on the surface with a soft filler. Later the filler dropped further into the crack and the decorative overlay went with it.

The moral to the story is that it will cost the same amount of time to do it right as to do it wrong. The Emecole system is the “Do It Right” cement crack repair system. It cures in about 10 minutes permanently bonding to the concrete.

There is virtually no downtime for resurfacing swimming pool concrete decks with a new decorative finish after the cement crack repair.
