Cleaning Mildew From Concrete

Surface Gel Teks Gelled Acids are an ideal product for cleaning mildew from concrete surfaces.  They solve significant problem that a typical liquid acid cannot provide. Acid has long been known to be the most effective product for cleaning not only mold and algae but also rust stains and oils from concrete surfaces.

The problem is that liquid acids are very difficult to control. They need to be diluted with water and lack an effective application method. Liquid acid is like trying to work a hammer without a handle.  Gels are to acid what a handle is to a hammer . They make the acid work.

If you have mildew on your concrete surface which has built up over the years on a patio, stairs or sidewalk you can simply pour the gelled acid into a paint tray and roll on the surface just like paint. Let the acids sit for about 15 minutes until they neutralize and wash off the surface.

The acid pulls the mildew, mold and algae out of the concrete and is contained in the gel. The gel works as a carrier. They come in two strengths. HD24 is 24% acid and the HD stands for heavy duty. HD 24 also will profile a sidewalk creating a non slip surface and is very effective as a concrete etching product prior to applying epoxy coatings. The other is Tek Gel for profiling which is 20% acid. Both are ASTM certified .

Etching Concrete Harborview Marina

There is only one fool proof remedy to make a slippery sidewalk non slip that I know of and that is etching concrete with a Gel Acid.

I received a call recently from a concrete contractor who was looking for a solution to a sidewalk that had a smooth finish not the typical broom finish.  Shotblasting might work but the expansion joints get in the way. Sandblasting might work but an incredible mess. A liquid acid solution might be feasible but typically are too weak and inconsistent.

The only solution, and a good one, is using a gel acid manufactured by Surface Gel Tek. As you see in the photo above taken at the Harbor Marina in Baltimore the concrete was not only smooth but slippery from years of mold and algae build.

They had tried numerous remedies but finally settled on HD 24 Gelled Acid which was rolled on. The acid removed the mold and algae etching and profiling the surface to a non slip finish. The project was 40,000 square feet.

NYC Basement Waterproofing

There are two products that will solve most NYC basement waterproofing issues. The first is an epoxy waterproofer that can be easily rolled on brick, concrete or block floors and walls. It’s a 100% solids epoxy that cures to ceramic like finish and withstands tons of moisture pressure keeping water out and basements dry.

Color packs can be mixed in with each gallon or it can be applied clear. It adheres to just about any material so it can be used to fill cracks and close up areas around pipes. It’s even submersible and is used to line concrete water tanks.

Connecticut is a wet state and waterproofing basement floors and walls causes many homeowners distress. Frequently the solution is not a major expense.

One of the leading causes of moisture is faulty gutters. Water coming off your roof that is not directed away from your foundation may be one of the leading causes. Having your gutters checked is your first step to moisture mitigation.

When water travels down your foundation walls tremendous pressure can build. Concrete block and poured concrete foundation walls and floors have airholes and veins that moisture vapor can penetrate. In many cases a new gutter system will alleviate some of your moisture problems.
